Stellantis and the South African Authorities Sign Framework Agreement to Manufacture Vehicles in South Africa

Stellantis’ collaboration with South African authorities to establish a vehicle manufacturing facility is progressing, aiming for completion by 2025. The agreement involves Stellantis, the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC), targeting the setup of the plant in a South African Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

This initiative is part of Stellantis’ “Dare Forward 2030” strategic plan, aiming to sell one million vehicles in the Middle East and Africa by 2030, with 70% of production based in the region. The South African manufacturing plant will play a crucial role in this strategy, enhancing regional production autonomy and meeting local demand more effectively (Stellantis.com) (Ground News) (LogistAfrica) (StartUp Magazine South Africa).

The establishment of this plant is expected to significantly benefit South Africa and the broader African region. For South Africa, it promises to boost the local manufacturing sector, create jobs, and attract further investment. South African Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition Ebrahim Patel highlighted the country’s strong car-making capacity and expressed optimism about the collaboration’s potential to expand the manufacturing base and create local employment opportunities (Stellantis.com) (LogistAfrica) (StartUp Magazine South Africa).

The broader impact on Africa includes the potential for increased automotive industry development, which could spur economic growth and technological advancements. By situating production closer to African markets, Stellantis can reduce costs, improve supply chain efficiency, and enhance the availability of vehicles tailored to regional needs (Stellantis.com) (LogistAfrica).
